DIY Healing Salve

A soothing balm for cuts, scrapes, and dry skin.

Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup beeswax pellets
  • 1/2 cup olive oil (or sweet almond oil)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 8 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 6 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 5 drops helichrysum essential oil (optional but highly beneficial)
  • 4 drops chamomile essential oil
  • 2 tablespoons calendula-infused oil (optional)
Tools You'll Need:
  • Double boiler (or a heat-safe glass bowl over a pot of water)
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • Small glass jars with lids for storage
  • Labels for your containers
  • Dropper for essential oils
Instructions:
  1. Prepare your workspace: Clean all surfaces and tools. Make sure your containers are sterilized by washing with hot, soapy water and drying thoroughly.
  2. Create a double boiler: Fill a pot with a few inches of water and place a heat-resistant glass bowl on top. Make sure the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the water.
  3. Melt the base: Add the beeswax, olive oil, and coconut oil to the bowl. Heat on medium-low until the beeswax is completely melted, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add calendula oil (if using): If you're using calendula-infused oil, add it now and stir to combine.
  5. Remove from heat: Once everything is melted and well combined, remove from heat and let cool for about 2-3 minutes. The mixture should still be liquid but not hot enough to damage the essential oils.
  6. Add essential oils: Add the essential oils one by one, stirring gently after each addition to ensure they're well incorporated.
  7. Pour into containers: Quickly pour the mixture into your prepared containers before it starts to solidify.
  8. Cool and set: Allow the salve to cool completely and solidify. This typically takes 1-2 hours.
  9. Label your containers: Include the date made and ingredients used.

How to Use Your Healing Salve

Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin as needed. This salve is perfect for:

  • Minor cuts and scrapes
  • Dry, cracked skin on hands, feet, and elbows
  • Chapped lips
  • Minor burns after they've cooled
  • Insect bites
  • Rashes and skin irritations

Pro Tips for the Perfect Salve

  • Adjust Consistency: For a firmer salve, add more beeswax. For a softer, more spreadable consistency, use less.
  • Test Before Pouring: If you want to test the consistency before pouring, place a small spoonful in the freezer for a minute, then check if it's the firmness you desire.
  • Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dark place to preserve the therapeutic properties of the essential oils.
  • Shelf Life: This salve typically stays good for about 6-12 months when stored properly.

Important Safety Notes

  • Patch Test: Always do a patch test before applying to larger areas, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Not for Deep Wounds: Do not use on deep or infected wounds.
  • Avoid Sensitive Areas: Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Pregnancy/Nursing: If you're pregnant or nursing, consult with a healthcare provider before using essential oils.
